What is a Passport Recognizer?

Passport Recognizer is a software technology transforming photos or scans of passports into meaningful structured data, backed by Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Natural Language Processing (NLP). This technology is mainly used to automate passport scanning in order to reduce the need of manual data entry.

Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) and Passport Recognizer

Meaningful information such as the name, passport number, or date of birth can be found in two different areas in the passport: (1) the body and (2) the MRZ. All the data are included in the passport's body while the MRZ only contains a subset of them. The MRZ is the zone including two lines of characters. It includes only the most important passport data and historically, technologies only rely on this area to capture information from passport images. Our Passport Recognizer reads information from both parts in order to optimize the performance of information extraction.

Passport Recognizer for KYC processes

Know Your Customer (KYC) is a very important part of business processes in many industries and companies. Optimizing these processes is one of the key challenges nowadays. OCR technologies act as an important role to solve this challenge, as they can help reduce manual data entry, avoid mistakes and save time.

Passport scanning issue

Passport scanning refers to the process of creating a digital image or pdf out of the physical passport and processing it. Most of the time, passport pictures are scanned from a printer or taken from a smartphone. In both situations, the application has to deal with images with noises, motion blur, scanner artifacts, or low-quality cameras.

Font for MRZ

The first machine-readable passports were issued in the '80s, and the font used was designed a decade before, with the constraint of being easily readable by any machines. This monospace typeface enhances the distinctness of each character, making them easier to be recognized by machines.
